다동 청키면가 (Da-dong Chung Kee Noodle)

The Hong Kong Wonton Noodle is a simple dish in which wonton noodles are served in a steaming hot soup with shrimp wontons.  Some establishments offer garnishes such as minced pork and vegetables like bok choy.

This simple dish is no where close to simple when it comes to the number of different stores in Hong Kong and the variety that they offer.  Mak's Noodle is arguably the most famous Wonton Noodle restaurant in Hong Kong.  It is a third generation family business dating back to the 1960s and they claim that the recipe remains unchanged since its opening.  What's interesting about the Mak family is that the father and the eldest son quarreled about the family business, prompting Mak Chi-Chung (the eldest son) to open up his own noodle shop called Mak An Kee (Chung Kee) Noodle.  Mak An Kee also has two stores in Korea - one in Itaewon and one in Da-dong.  My father actually wanted to check out Chung Kee Noodle so we took a visit to the Da-dong branch.

Open Kitchen.  Looks very clean.

Prepare the dipping sauce.

And the beer.

Started off with what makes this place famous - 새우완탕면 (Shrimp Wonton with Noodles)

Two shrimp pieces per wonton.

A small order (5 pieces) of 수교 (Pork Dumplings)

I liked this better than the Shrimp Wontons.

수교면 (Pork Dumpling with Noodles)

The texture of the noodles were excellent - al dente; but lacked flavor.

 청키볶음면 (Chung Kee Fried Noodle)

 Best dish of the night.

짜장로미엔과 수교 (Sweet & Sour Pork with Noodles & Pork Dumplings)

So so.

Wow, what a disappointment.  I'm not sure if Chung Kee is any different in flavor from Mak's Noodle but I'd have to assume that they use the same family recipe.  I took a trip to Hong Kong in 2013 and decided on Tsim Chai Kee Noodle over Mak's Noodle and I'm actually really glad I made that choice.  Tsim Chai Kee's broth can be a bit salty but it packed a lot more flavor and their dumplings were HUGE.  The dumplings at Chung Kee, especially the shrimp wontons, are a disappointment.

Here's the bowl from Tsim Chai Kee

This was $4 US!

Can Tsim Chai Kee come to Korea??
