Happy 2014 everyone! After a long hiatus, I'm back on the blog. I have so many restaurants to blog about and I didn't know which one to begin with so mind as well start with the restaurant I visited today.
오가와 (おがわ) (Ogawa) is one of the most popular sushi restaurants in Seoul. Only a few years ago, legitimate sushi restaurants (ones that are not conveyer belt sushi) were sparse and typically only available at high end hotels, most notably Sushi Cho located inside the Chosun Westin Seoul, where prices start at $100. No longer the case today as sushi restaurants such as Ogawa, Sushi Go, Sushi Ame opened its doors and began offering sushi course meals at a very affordable price. So let's check out Ogawa.
Ogawa is located on the basement floor of the Royal Building in Gwanghwamun.

Ogawa means "small river" in Japanese.
Very simple menu: Lunch Course, Dinner Course, and Take-Out. From what I've seen and heard, there isn't a huge difference between the lunch and dinner course (the dinner course offers some sashimi). So I decided to make reservations for the lunch course on a Saturday. And you definitely need reservations here as there are only 20 seats at the sushi bar. No tables.
전복내장죽 (Abalone Intestine Porridge). Much much better than it looks haha.
Welcome dish. There's a lot of jokes about this salad. They offered this when they first opened up the restaurant and the prices were cheaper than what they are today. They've raised the price through the years but the welcome dish hasn't changed.
Miso Soup
Afternoon beer.
Hirame (Flounder)
Akami (Tuna)
Uni (Sea Urchin Roe)
Hiramasa (Yellowtail Amberjack)
Anago (Salt Water Eel)
Toro (Tuna Belly)
Came out slightly seared. I prefer fresh toro.
We were seated right in front of the head chef. Fun to watch him in action.
Tai (Red Snapper)
Kaibashira (Grilled Scallop)
Aji (Spanish Mackerel)
Ika (Squid).
Garnished with some flavored sea salt.
Mushi Awabi (Steamed Abalone)
Nishin (Herring)
I'm usually not a big fan of herring but this was the sushi of the meal.
Don't know what this is...
Sake (Salmon)
Udon
Angel Rings. Asahi is famous for creating these angel rings on the beer glass.
Shime Saba (Japanese Pickled Mackerel)
Tamago (Egg)
Usually the last piece of any sushi course.
Or not. Maki.
Cucumber and Rice...
Chef asked if we wanted anything else and of course we both asked for a piece of uni.
So good.
So looking through the pictures, I counted 18 pieces of sushi. 18 pieces of quality sushi for 40,000 won. When you include udon and the other welcome dishes, I'll round it down to about 2,000 won per sushi. That's an amazing deal. Christine and I were both extremely satisfied with our meal and we'll probably come back and try the dinner course.
