홍콩 팀호완 딤섬 (Hong Kong Tim Ho Wan Dim Sum)

Tim Ho Wan is a tremendously popular and affordable dim sum restaurant in Hong Kong.  It originally started out as a hole in the wall in Mong Kok but since then, it has opened a branch in Sham Shui Po and one under the IFC Mall in Hong Kong Station while the original location in Mong Kok has closed down.  You may remember an old post where I went all the way to Mong Kok to find this place, only to find out that it no longer operates out of its original location.  I find that ludicrous but whatever...  You can read that story here: http://woongkyoandyujung.blogspot.kr/2013/02/hong-kong-day-3-tim-ho-wan-that-no.html

Tim Ho Wan was crowned with the famous Michelin star in 2009, making it the cheapest Michelin starred restaurant in the city, quite possibly the cheapest Michelin starred restaurant in the world.  So, let's check out what the whole hype is out!

View from my bathroom.  Rained all week while I was in Hong Kong.

Tim Ho Wan is located on the basement floor of the IFC Mall with a group of other restaurants.

I avoided going at peak hours.  This is the scene around 4pm.  A very short line.  Just be prepared to sit next to a bunch of strangers.

So the 4 "Heavenly King Dim Sum" from Tim Ho Wan are shown above.  I tried the first two along with Ha Jiao (Steamed Shrimp Dumplings), Steamed Sparerib with Black Bean Sauce, and Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf.

Communal pot of tea.  3 HK Dollars.

Tim Ho Wan's famous Baked Bun with BBQ Pork

Doesn't look very appetizing but it was really good.  The bun is really sweet on the outside while the BBQ Pork has a good mix of sweet and salty flavor.  One was enough so I ended up taking the rest in a to go box.  I had other things to eat!

Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf

Generous pieces of chicken inside.

Steamed Rice Roll stuffed with Pig's Liver

Wasn't too impressed with this one.  But the cilantro surprisingly went well with pig's liver.

Steamed Shrimp Dumplings

Steamed Spareribs in Black Bean Sauce

5 Dim Sum items and Tea for 106 HK Dollars (roughly $14 US).

This was the line/scene when I finished my meal and was heading home during peak dinner hours.

Despite the Michelin star, I wasn't very impressed with Tim Ho Wan.  I've had just as good dim sum in Chinatown in San Francisco or Chicago.  Not sure what influenced the Michelin star.  It's worth taking the time to dine here but I'm not sure if I would go out of my way to come here again.  What I do miss is this....

Hot Star Chicken!
