Kushiyaki (grilled skewers) or more commonly known as yakitori is something that many of us are familiar with. It's a very common dish offered at Japanese restaurants, especially izakayas. However, it's not very often that you'll run into a kushikatsu restaurant in the states or even in Korea.
Kushikatsu is a Japanese dish of fried skewers ranging from... well it can be made of pretty much anything. Kushikatsu restaurants can be found all over Japan but it is a specialty in Osaka, specifically in the Shinsekai neighborhood. The most popular kushikatsu restaurant in Osaka is Kushikatsu Daruma which was established in 1929 and has been frying skewers for four generations. Kushikatsu Daruma can be easily found by looking for an angry character standing in front of the store holding a pair of fried skewers.
Kushikatsu is more bar food rather than a full meal so we visited Kushikatsu Daruma after our dinner at Yakiniku M. You can read the review on Matsuzakagyu Yakiniku M at the link below.
A very common otoshi in Japan - a bowl of cabbage.
Why is draft beer so delicious in Japan?
There are several rules here at Daruma. But the most important rule here is to not double dip into the communal dipping sauce! It's actually a very simple rule observed by many cultures... except Korea lol. I imagine this little notice was made specifically for Koreans.
So this sweet, ponzu-like sauce is what the instruction is referring to and is used to dip the cabbage and kushikatsu. Again, don't double dip!
There are several branches of Daruma in Osaka and each location has a different set up. This location was all bar style seating.
Every skewer made fresh to order.
A Korean menu. Not uncommon in Japan these days due to the large number of Korean tourists. You can order each piece individually or order a set menu. There are three set menus which differ in the number and type of skewers served. We ordered the 12 piece set menu and each set menu also came with a choice of doteyaki, kimchee, or edamame.
Doteyaki - Simmered Beef Tendon with Miso and Mirin
The doteyaki was very sweet, similar to a Korean 갈비찜 (Galbijjim) but sweeter. Spiced it up with a dash of shichimi.
Hozenji Set (12 pieces)
It took no more than 5 minutes for our order to arrive. None were pre-made either.
Chicken
You only get to dip once so you gotta soak it all the way through.
(*We used our cabbage like a spoon to put more sauce on the skewer as well)
Fried Cheese. SO GOOD.
Shrimp
Cheese inside Chikuwa Fish Cake
Christine LOVES cheese so we ordered another piece of the cheese skewer and another piece of the cheese inside chikuwa fish cake. We also love kawa (chicken skin) and nankotsu (chicken cartilage) grilled skewers and were curious as to what they would taste fried so ordered a piece of those as well.
Nankotsu. This was my favorite piece.
Kawa. This was a bit too dry. Grilled chicken skin is definitely better.
Cheese and more cheese. Fried.
Another location on the famous Dotonbori Street
This was by far one of the most satisfying and cost-friendly meals we had in Japan. Kushikatsu isn't something you can find easily outside of Japan so definitely give it a try when you are in Japan, especially in Osaka.
