샌디에고 스시 오타 (San Diego Sushi Ota)

Sushi Ota - one of my favorite restaurants in San Diego.  I'll skip the introduction/information on the restaurant since I provided a thorough one in my first post so you can refer to that:

July 18th.  It's my birthday!  I can't remember the last time I spent my birthday with my parents but I was fortunate enough to do so this year.  My parents wanted to treat me to a special dinner so I was thinking either Ruth's Chris Steakhouse or San Diego's finest sushi - Sushi Ota.  I went with Sushi Ota since this is only available in San Diego while Ruth's is a franchise available elsewhere in the States.

We typically order some appetizers, couple Ota Sashimi plates, and select sushi off the sushi menu but since it's a special occasion we had the Omakase (Chef's Course) which isn't on the menu and needs to be requested couple days in advance.

Start off with some Asahi 生ビール (draft beer)

Always a full house.

Appetizer - Halibut and Octopus in Truffle Oil

I forget the name of the flower but it was edible and all organic produce is acquired locally from Chino Farms.

Sashimi - Amaebi (Monster Amaebi...), Otoro, Hamachi, Uni

I'll let the pictures do the talking.  Ota is all about quality.

Alright.  We need some more booze.

Really helpful for those that are unfamiliar with sake.

Senshin.  One of the best from Japan.

My parents.  So much respect for these two.

Whenever we order Amaebi sashimi in Korea, we always save the head, ask the server to have it fried and brought back to us.  Most of them give us a very odd look but you don't even have to ask at Sushi Ota.  It's expected, just as it is in Japan.

Asked for some Spicy Mayo.  So good.

Third Dish - Grilled Mackerel stuffed with Mushrooms served with Uni Paste and Fish Cracker.

More sake - Hakkaisan

Fourth Dish - Assorted Tempura with Green Tea Salt

Tempura Shrimp with Almond Batter

Fifth Dish - Assorted Sushi

Chutoro

Mirugai?? Some type of clam.

Sake

Uni

Ume Shiso Maki and Negitoro Maki

I was really surprised when I saw this cake because I thought the restaurant provided it as a birthday dessert but my family actually brought it in beforehand.

The Omakase Course at $120 wasn't bad but I didn't think it was great either.  I'd much rather pick out some appetizers, get the Ota Sahimi platter at $44, order couple hot dishes, and then some sushi for that same price.  But it does provide an opportunity to taste some of Ota's unique dishes such as the mushroom stuffed mackerel and almond battered shrimp tempura which isn't on the menu.

Thanks for an amazing birthday meal, Ota!
