캘리포니아 인 앤 아웃 (In-N-Out Burger)

If the East Coast has Shake Shack, the West Coast has In-N-Out.  In-N-Out Burger is a regional chain with locations in five western states: California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and Texas (not so western.. but whatever).  What started out as a single family burger restaurant that opened in 1948 has become a $465 million dollar business in just 65 years.  In-N-Out continues to be family owned and has resisted franchising in order to maintain quality and customer consistency which can be compromised by excessively rapid business growth.

Ok, the menu.  Pretty simple, right?  Not so fast.  I'm sure all you Californians know that the menu extends far beyond what is written on that board.  The so called "secret menu" is so diverse that you can basically create whatever... thing... you want and they will try to accommodate your order.  For example, the menu has a "Double-Double" Burger but you can go as big as a 4x4, which is four patties and a slice of cheese in between each patty.  Several years ago, there was no limit and someone ordered a 100x100.  The news spread quickly and many people started ordering the 100x100, leaving In-N-Out to put a limit to this madness to the 4x4.  Here's a picture of a 100x100:

A group of 6-7 guys supposedly ate that whole thing.

A more edible 20x20.

On the Atkin's diet?  Get the "Flying Dutchman."  Two slices of cheese melted between two burger patties.

A big mustard fan?  Get it "Mustard Grilled" and they will grill your patty in mustard.

Not in the mood for a burger?  Order the "Grilled Cheese."

As you can see, the secret menu is endless.  Just google "secret In-N-Out menu" and you will be amazed at the imagination and creativity of In-N-Out customers.  It exists because someone ordered it at one point or another.

As for myself, I typically go for the Double-Double with Animal-Style Fries.  If you are unfamiliar with the "Animal-Style" nomenclature, you will find out shortly.

Why did I take a picture of a soda fountain?  Because I miss free refills!  God Bless America and the free refills at 99.99% of all fast food restaurants.  Free refills simply do not exist in Korea, even at McDonald's.  (WTF Ronald?)

In-N-Out Pink Lemonade.  It's good.

This was around 11pm.  A good number of customers even at this hour.

At some locations, these come in small packages and you have to ask for them.  This branch has them in a self-serve container.

My brother and his gf opted for the "Protein-Style" Cheeseburger which is a bun-less burger.  On the far right is my Double-Double.

Protein-Style Cheeseburger.

"Animal-Style Fries" on the left and "Light Fries" on the right.  So "Animal-Style" basically smothers your fries with diced grilled onions, cheese, and the In-N-Out spread.  You can also get any burger "Animal-Style."

As for the fries, you can choose between "Light," or "Well Done."  "Light" fries give you the limpy, uncrispy french fries that sometimes come in McDonald's fries (my favorite).  And you know those crunchy, crispy fries that also come in McDonald's fries?  Say "Well Done" and that's what you'll get at In-N-Out.

You can also ask for "medium rare" for a nice, pink center.  I obviously forgot to do that.

Now that you know the "secret" menu, more things to try/eat at your next visit to In-N-Out!
